Professor Aslani has been a researcher and educator in the field of consumer medicine information and adherence for the past 25 years. She has worked as a community pharmacist in the UK and Australia.

Dr Janet Cheung is Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at the School of Pharmacy, University of Sydney. She is a registered pharmacist with a broad research interest in empowering patient participation in their own health care. Angela is a Lecturer in the discipline of Accounting at the University of Sydney Business School. She holds a Bachelor of Economics Degree (1st Class Honours) from The University of Sydney and has completed a PhD in 2017 which focused on ‘Assurance of Natural Resource Management’. Angela completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education in 2017 continuing her expertise in teaching both UG and PG audit units and research across Auditing, Non-Financial Assurance and more recently WIL and assessment design. Prior to academia, Angela worked in Telecommunications and was an Auditor at Coopers & Lybrand (PwC).

Dr Crawford is a nurse academic drawing on 20 years of clinical experience in nursing and community health to teach chronic disease management, community health nursing and social determinants of health. She has particular interest in the learning and experiences of student nurses from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD). This has led to research into and the development of academic and social supports, including the adoption of active learning methods that strengthen the learning and cross-cultural interactions between students.

LAW - Discuss the problems and challenges of regulating Artificial Intelligence

Description

Join José-Miguel in this Taster class to learn more about Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be of great service to humanity. AI systems will be able to tackle many existing challenges in health, transport, communication, government and many other domains. AI has the potential to benefit human beings and societies all across the globe. Yet, its use could also be a magnifier of existing discrimination, inequality and exclusion and amplify social and economic divides. Some of these issues are legitimate ethical concerns that do not require a legal approach. Some others could be addressed by existing laws. There are, however, some aspects of the use of AI systems that will require new regulatory approaches and techniques. This taster will offer a few insights about the problems, the options and the trade-offs to regulate AI.

José-Miguel is a Research Fellow at the Law School and the Institutions programme of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S). He is a member of the Diplomatic Corps of Spain (on leave) and previously worked in different capacities for the European Union. In 2021 he was a Fulbright-Schuman scholar at the Harvard Law School. His current research focuses on regulatory approaches to ADM and Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially on how to deal with risks derived from the operation of AI systems from a comparative approach.

Jen Grinham’s research interests include data privacy, ethics, profiling, algorithmic bias, internet cultures, governance, digital media, and she is currently examining student data privacy risks created by educational technology companies. Jen has experience teaching in Digital Cultures at the University of Sydney, in the NSW Department of Education as an educator, an Instructional Leader for the NSW Australian History Syllabus, conducting professional development on technology, and with NSW Health in digital content.

Alan Fekete is Professor of Enterprise Software Systems within the School of Computer Science at the University of Sydney. His undergraduate education was at the University of Sydney, and his doctorate was earned in the mathematics department of Harvard University. Professor Fekete has been an academic at the University of Sydney since 1988, and was promoted to Professor from 2010.

Professor Ali Abbas received both his Bachelors and PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Sydney, Australia. He held a lecturing contract at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Sydney before joining, in 2004, the new School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was appointed, in 2007, to the lecturing position at UNSW Asia in Chemical Engineering in the Division of Engineering Science and Technology. Associate Professor Abbas returned to the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Sydney later in 2007. His engineering research is in the area of Process Systems Engineering with emphasis on model-based optimal operation of particulate, energy and bio- systems. He has strong interests in education and teaching with particular focus on curriculum design and integration as well as on experiential e-learning and virtual worlds (such as the University's Second Life world). Professor Abbas is Chair of the organising committee for the inaugural ‘Australian Circular Economy Conference’ (ACEC) (19-20 November 2018).

The impacts of Covid 19 have prompted business organisations to re-evaluate how they operate and manage their staff and strategic partnerships. Learning to lead and manage people effectively in this new environment is critical. This session introduces some of the approaches and initiatives that have been adopted by business in this new challenging environment. It explores these approaches through the lens of how these issues are studied within the ‘Management and Leadership’ major, and how they address the UN sustainability development goals.

Mark Westcott is a senior lecturer and current Deputy Program Director of our Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Sydney Business School. Mark teaches in the areas of management and organisations, sociology of work and theories of work and organisation. His research into workplace industrial relations and corporate governance has been published in a number of leading Australian and international journals. Mark is developing a research program examining the issues of financialisation and inequality, particularly examining the evolution of financial markets and institutions in Australia and their impact on employment and labour management.

Join Vicky Browne and get ready to re-situate how we think and interact with the everyday materials around us. You will need some A4 paper and a phone with a camera at the ready. This taster session is adapted from a longer 3D Foundation First Year class that considers the way artists approach materials. It develops art making processes that consider connections between language, actions and materials in a practice-led way.

Vicky Browne is an artist and lecture at Sydney College of the Arts and is currently coordinating the first year Foundation Visual Arts program. Browne has been practicing art for the last 20 years. Her work embraces cross disciplinary practice incorporating sound, video, sculpture and image making into large-scale installations. Currently, her work Cosmic Noise is traveling throughout Australia in an exhibition titled Material Sound curated by Dr Caleb Kelly and hosted by Museums and Galleries NSW. Her up in-coming exhibition Work/Play is supported by the Australian Council of the Arts.

Dr Paul Finn is a Lecturer with the Discipline of Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Sydney. In his current role, Paul is co-developing the first cross-faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship major which will span five other faculties in the university. In addition, Paul is coordinating Strategic Management and Strategy, Innovation and Management units at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Paul is also an experienced lecturer in Change Management and Entrepreneurship studies. Paul gained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the disciplines of Organisation Studies and Entrepreneurship from the University of Melbourne. His research interests include organisational creativity, entrepreneurship, power, and advanced qualitative research methods.
